Johana’s journey to achieve her dream career in healthcare was anything but easy. The traditional school system posed challenges that caused her to feel like she couldn’t succeed.
"I didn’t succeed in school and didn’t pass my science classes," Johana recalls. "It was really disheartening." Though her true passion was in science, she felt that a career in that field was out of reach and instead pursued a degree that seemed more attainable.
Despite these hurdles, Johana’s interest in science never faded. While finishing her degree, she began taking medical terminology classes and exploring the medical field. After graduating, she did her own research and discovered Opportunity Junction’s Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program.
"I had no clue what to expect, but the program was life-changing for me," Johana says. "It gave me the confidence and foundation I needed to start pursuing my dreams."
Johana enrolled in Opportunity Junction’s CNA program in January of 2024. The experience was transformative in more ways than one. "It gave me a huge foundation—not just for nursing school but for life. My teachers were incredible. I still remember my first clinical rotation. We were thrown in, and I was terrified to work with people, but I grew so much from that experience."
The program also introduced Johana to lifelong friends and peers who shared her journey. "I met one of my best friends there, who went on to become a speech pathologist. The support system was amazing," Johana shares.
Her CNA experience not only prepared her for nursing school but also gave her the confidence and skills to connect deeply with patients. "Working with vulnerable people from all walks of life was eye-opening. Every patient has their own story, and it’s fascinating how much suffering happens that we don’t see in our daily lives. Yet, these patients are often so grateful—they’ve shared recipes, advice, and so much wisdom with me. These connections have shaped me as a person."
Johana has now graduated from nursing school, just passed her board exams, and is officially a registered nurse! "It was such a full-circle moment. My CNA program at Opportunity Junction laid the groundwork for everything I’ve accomplished so far."
Johana plans to move back to California and is eager to apply for nursing jobs and continue her journey in healthcare. "My work as a CNA gave me the opportunity to support myself while in nursing school, and I think every nurse should start as a CNA. It gives you a deeper understanding of patient care and what it means to connect with people on a human level."
Johana credits Opportunity Junction for helping her succeed during a pivotal time in her life. "They gave me—and so many others—the chance to succeed. I didn’t have the money to pay for it at the time, and they made it possible for me to join. I’m incredibly grateful for that opportunity and for the people I met along the way."
As Johana puts it, "Every step of this journey has contributed to who I am today. I’m so grateful to have had this experience."
