When the recent government shutdown left many of our students struggling with lost income and reduced food benefits, the OJ team and community rallied together.
During the recent government shutdown, many of our students felt its harsh impact. Not only were they unable to work while enrolled full-time in our programs, but many also saw their food benefits paused or reduced — leaving some facing real food insecurity.
Across our programs, 30 students — including 15 from the Administrative Careers Training (ACT) program and 15 from the Healthcare Career Pathways (HCP) — reported a combined monthly income loss of approximately $12,000.
In true Opportunity Junction spirit, our staff immediately jumped into action to fill the gap. Their compassion and dedication were nothing short of inspiring:
- Extra food from Loaves and Fishes was ordered to supplement daily hot lunches and provide leftovers for students to take home.
- Additional supplies from the food bank were included in the weekly grocery totes our students rely on.
- Small gift cards were distributed to help students purchase essentials in between food deliveries.
- Staff members actively shared community resources and information to ensure no student went unsupported.
- And in an incredible show of generosity, an anonymous donor contributed $50 to each student impacted, helping to ease the burden during a very difficult time.
We are incredibly proud of our team’s quick, heartfelt response — and deeply grateful to our community for stepping up to support our students. In challenging times like these, their actions reflected the very best of Opportunity Junction: a community that shows up for one another when it matters most.
